Using Character References in Prompts
You can use images as character references in your prompts to create images of the same character in different scenarios.
To add a character reference to your prompt, use the --cref
parameter with the web address (URL) of an image stored online: --cref URL

View Original Image
When using images generated by Midjourney, the --cref
reference works best. --cref
is not designed for photos of real people and may distort the image. Exact details like specific freckles or a logo on a T-shirt are unlikely to be replicated. --cref
can be used with both Midjourney and Niji Version 6, and can also be combined with --sref
. You can use multiple character references in a single prompt, though this may not always be necessary. Any regular image prompts must be placed before --cref
. Privacy Note
Upload images using Midjourney Bot in your private messages to prevent other server users from seeing the images. Image prompts and references are visible on the Midjourney website unless you generate in Incognito Mode. See the Image Prompt page for help on using image URLs in prompts.

Character Weight Parameter
Use the character weight parameter --cw
to set the strength of the representation. --cw
accepts values between 0 and 100. --cw 0
focuses only on the character’s face. Higher values use the character’s face, hair, and clothing. --cw 100
is the default value.

–cw 0

–cw 50

–cw 100

Combining Style and Character References
To maintain a consistent style while using character references, you can combine the --sref
and --cref
parameters. For more information on using --sref
, see the Style Reference page.
